YellowJackets set for first-ever ASC Softball Tournament Championship

LONGVIEW, April 30, 2014— The LeTourneau University softball team has secured its first-ever spot at the ASC Softball Tournament Championship, this week at Suddenlink Field in Tyler, Texas.

“It’s extremely gratifying to be in the tournament as we have worked really hard as a coaching staff to put together a team that can go to the post season,” said head coach Kate Bell. “It’s really exciting because we have five seniors that have been with me for four years – one as an assistant and three as the head coach – for them to have worked this hard and take it to this next level.”

The YellowJackets (16-24 overall, 11-22 ASC) enter the double-elimination tournament as the No. 8 seed and play the No. 1 seed Texas-Tyler (37-3 overall, 31-2 ASC) at 10 a.m., on Thursday. LeTourneau has recorded a .266 team batting average on 272 hits and drove in 116 runs. On the mound, the YellowJackets rank third in the ASC in innings pitched (258.1) and recorded 146 strike outs in addition to a 3.01 team ERA.

The 2014 Championship marks the 16th in league history dating back to 1999 and is the first tournament to be hosted by Texas-Tyler. The ASC champion will earn the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship. The regionals of the NCAA DIII Championship will be played May 9-11, with the Super Regionals scheduled to be played May 16-17. The NCAA DIII Championship will be played May 22-27, and will be hosted by Texas-Tyler at Suddenlink Field.
