Westwood Lady Panthers edged the Frankston Lady Indians

WESTWOOD, April 5, 2017—The Westwood Lady Panthers edged the Frankston Lady Indians 6-5 in extra innings at home Tuesday night.  Freshman Brynna McGuire was the winning pitcher and earned three strikeouts in the effort.

Frankston broke out with a 3-0 lead the top of the first inning. Westwood's Kaitlyn Sumrow was hit by a pitch and Katie Trimble singled.  Both were moved into scoring positions on a wild pitch, but were unable to score.

The Lady Panthers made their way onto the scoreboard after scoring one in the second inning after Avrey Jenkins walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and was drove in by a Sumrow single to right center.  While Frankston remained scoreless from the 2nd inning through the 6th, Westwood continued to work their way into the lead.

Korbyn Bassett was walked in the third inning, then pushed over to second by a hard grounder by catcher Destanie Sherrill.  Bassett and courtesy runner Makenzie Nettles advanced a base on an illegal pitch call on Frankston's Jordan Moss.  Bassett scored on a sacrifice fly to center hit by Katlin Hardy, then Nettles scored next from second on a McGuire line drive to right center.

Kaitlyn Sumrow, who went 3 for 4 on the night, led off the 4th inning with a single, and scored after a two-run homerun by Bassett.

The Lady Panthers led 5-3 the top of the 7th, but Frankston's Trinity Boggs drove in two runs to tie up the game. Westwood failed to score the bottom of the 7th, which sent the game into an extra inning.  Bassett and Sumrow were able to handle hard hit grounders and left fielder Autumn Stevens caught a pop fly to hold the Lady Indians scoreless during the top of the 8th.   With two outs, Westwood's Stevens singled to left field.  Leadoff hitter Sumrow then singled to right field, sending Stevens toward third base.  A Frankston overthrow at third sent Stevens home to score the winning run.

This was a key win for the Lady Panthers that puts them back in the hunt for a playoff spot.  They face the Teague Lady Lions in Teague Friday at 6:00pm.
