RICHARDSON, August 22, 2014- The UT Tyler women's soccer team has been picked to finish second in the 2014 American Southwest Conference preseason poll, the league office announced Thursday. Last season, the Patriots finished the year with 12 wins and reached the conference semi-finals.
UT Tyler received three first-place votes (170 points), a year after going 12-6 overall and 6-4 in a very competitive conference.
The Patriots return a wealth of talented players who will play a big role on this year's squad, including three All-Region players, Courtney Dunstan and Chestley Strother.
Dunstan, a senior from Richmond, helped lead a defense that gave up just 0.83 goals per game last season.
Strother led the team in goals scored (9) and total points (20) a season ago, earning First Team All-ASC honors.
Hardin-Simmons (16-2-1/9-0-1 ASC) received 197 points in the preseason poll and recorded 17 of 20 possible first-place votes.
Coach Marcus Wood and the Cowgirls enter the 2014 season coming off their 11th consecutive ASC Championship and an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship.
The Preseason Players to Watch List is composed of three players from each institution and nominated by the head coaches. Fifteen of the 30 players submitted were all-conference selections in 2013.
The 2014 season is the 19th in ASC history and will begin play August 29. The ASC Championship is scheduled for Nov. 6, 8-9, and will be hosted at the site of the women's No. 1 seed. An automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship will be on the line.
