UT Tyler Volleyball picked to finish fifth in ASC Preseason Poll

RICHARDSON, August 26, 2014-- The UT Tyler volleyball is picked to finish in fifth-place in the 2014 American Southwest Conference preseason poll, the league office announced on Monday.  Last season, the Patriots reached the postseason and set a new program-record for wins in-a-season with 24.

Head coach Suzanne Henson enters her fourth season at the helm, and looks to reach new heights, welcoming back a strong squad for 2014.

The Patriots return four All-ASC performers from a year ago, including seniors Breanna Brummett and Kayte Stein, and sophomores Rebecca Floyd and Courney Criswell.

Brummett set a season-record for points in a season with 516.5, totaling 425 kills, 74 service aces, and 27 total blocks in 2013.

Floyd returns for her sophomore campaign, a year after setting a season-record for total assists with 1,294, a mark that lead the ASC.

UT Tyler totaled 109 points after a vote by the league's sports information directors and head coaches.

Mary Hardin-Baylor (139 points) was picked to finish first, while Texas-Dallas, Hardin-Simmmons and East Texas Baptist were picked to finish second through fourth.

The 2014 ASC championship is predicted to be a highly contested race as 12 points separated the top four teams in the preseason poll with each institution receiving more than one first-place vote. The top three teams in the preseason poll each played in the NCAA Division III Championship in 2013.

The  ASC Volleyball Preseason Players to Watch List is composed of two players from each institution and nominated by the head coaches. Ten of the 18 players were all-conference selections last season.

The 2014 season is the 19th in ASC history and teams will begin play August 29.

The ASC Championship Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 6-8 and will be hosted at the site of the No. 1 seed, with an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship on the line.

UT Tyler will open play this Friday at 5:30 p.m., against Pomona-Pitzer in Claremont, California.
