TYLER, January 27, 2014-- The UT Tyler men's basketball team put a scare in American Southwest Conference-leader Texas-Dallas on Saturday, but could not hang on, falling 76-72. Four Patriots scored in double-digits led by Jordan Cannon's 17 points in the loss.
After taking a game-high 13-point lead with 14:44 remaining on a Bryce Kemp layup, UT Tyler (9-8, 8-6) could not hold off a pesky Texas-Dallas (15-1, 13-0) team.
The Comets closed out the half on a stunning, 34-17 run, including a stretch of four minutes holding the Patriots scoreless.
Chris Rios gave UT Tyler a 69-67 lead with 4;15 left to play in the second half, the last lead of the game for the Patriots.
UT Tyler would not hit another bucket until Stephon Hall's three-pointer with five seconds remaining, bringing the score to the final, 76-72.
In the first half, UTD took a 17-11 lead at the 12:01 mark, but UT Tyler would answer back, closing out the first half with a 39-35 lead.
That lead would hold until 5:07 remaining in the second half, when Kyle Schleigh hit a layup to make it 67-67.
The Patriots would end the day shooting 48-percent, but just 25-percent from beyond-the-arc.
Texas-Dallas finished slightly better, shooting 50-percent from the field and 30-percent from three-point land.
In a game that was close throughout, UT Tyler did win the important rebounding battle, 33-32.
The Patriots will now get ready to take on East Texas Baptist on Thursday, January 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Marshall.
