TYLER, January 23, 2014— The UT Tyler baseball team has been picked by 35 voters from around the American Southwest Conference to repeat as the league's 2014 champions. The Patriots received 33 of the possible 35 first-place votes, receiving 418 total points.
The Patriots went an impressive 37-12 in 2013, winning the ASC championship en route to the NCAA Regional semi-final and a No. 18 ranking in the final D3baseball.com Top-25 poll.
This season, the Patriots are ranked as the No. 11 team in the Baseball News preseason poll and No. 14 in the D3baseball.com preseason poll.
UT Tyler had two players listed on the 2014 Players to Watch List, outfielder/designated-hitter Kevan House and pitcher Jake Beam.
House was the ASC east division's Player of the Year in 2013, finishing the season with a .380 average, eight homeruns, 44 RBI, 117 total-bases, 16 doubles and six triples.
The senior was named to the D3baseball.com All-American team as well as the All-West Region team after his stellar first-year with the Patriots.
Beam, a senior from Bullard was named to the Watch List after sporting an impressive 1.50 ERA in 13 appearances last season, mostly from out of the bullpen.
This season, Beam expects to take a bigger role in the starting rotation.
Concordia-Tx (22-22, 11-7) recieved no first-place votes, but totaled 352 points, and was picked to finish second in the preseason poll, followed by Louisiana College (26-19, 12-6) who received the remaining two first-place votes.
Texas-Dallas (21-21, 12-8) was picked to finish fourth, followed by Hardin-Simmons (22-20, 8-10) to round out the top-five.
UT Tyler will open the season with the Trinity Tigers on Friday, February 7 at 7 p.m. in San Antonio.
The Patriots' home-opener will come on Friday, February 14 againt TLU in the Clements Fluids Classic at 6 p.m. UT Tyler will also play Centenary in two games on Saturday, February 15 beginning at 5 p.m. in Tyler.
ASC-play will begin the following week, when the Lobos of Sul Ross State come to Tyler for a three-game weekend series, beginning on Friday, February 21 at 6 p.m.
The Patriots will host Ozarks, Texas-Dallas, East Texas Baptist and Concordia in conference home series this season, and hit the road to take on Mary Hardin-Baylor, Louisiana College, Hardin-Simmons, LeTourneau, Howard Payne and Mississippi College.
The ASC Championship Tournament is scheduled for May 7-10, with the host to be determined by regular season conference-record.
