ATHENS, May 16, 2013-- Fourth-seed NE Oklahoma A&M bolted out to an early lead and never looked back as the Norse claimed a 5-1 decision over Trinity Valley Community College in the first round of the 2013 NJCAA Division I Women's Softball National Championship tournament Wednesday afternoon, at the Canyons Complex.
NEO (43-9) will now go on to face #5-seed Pima (AZ) CC in the championship bracket quarterfinal Thursday afternoon. Meanwhile, TVCC (33-26) will play #12-seed Paris (TX) JC in an elimination game today, at 3:30 p.m.
The Norse tallied four first inning runs, highlighted by a pair of consecutive RBI-safeties from Emily Walters and Ashton Pratt. Trinity Valley looked like it would make a game of it in the second as Erica Jordan led off the frame with a solo homer. The Cardinals tacked on three more hits to load the bases, but Norse hurler Kaitlin Davis fanned two to get out of the jam.
NEO added another run in the third and Davis made the lead stand as she held TVCC to just four hits the rest of the way to pick up the victory.
Today's game will be the eighth TVCC-Paris game this season. Paris defeated the Lady Cardinals twice in the championship games of the Region XIV tournament and owns five wins in the series this season. The Lady Cardinals take a 33-26 win into today's game. Paris is 36-18.
The TVCC-Paris winner will face the Chipola-Lake Land loser tonight at 7:30 p.m.
