AUSTIN, May 9, 2014— The UT Tyler baseball team dropped a close 3-2 game to Howard Payne on Thursday morning, and was eliminated from the 2014 American Southwest Conference baseball tournament. The Patriots finished the season with a 16-26 overall record.
The Patriots found themselves down 2-0 after the top of the first, as Howard Payne (20-22) scored two on a Kulczyk double.
UT Tyler cut the lead in half in the fourth, as Buddy McCoy reached base on a single and stole second. McCoy would score on a Derick Smith single, making the score 2-1 Yellow Jackets.
HPU would go up 3-1 in the top of the eighth, but the Patriots would add another run in the bottom half of the inning on a Billy Lirely sac-fly.
That would be as close as UT Tyler would get, as the Jackets' reliever would hold the Patriots scoreless in the ninth.
UT Tyler ends the season with a 16-26 record.
