PALESTINE, April 25, 2017—Destyni Nays singed with Tyler Junior College to pursue her future in volleyball.
Nays is a special student at Palestine. She joined the Wildcats athletics after moving from Elkhart ISD. Her record at Elkhart included “Newcomer of the Year” and averaging 10 to 15 kills a game. She played with the All-District team her senior year during the fall before moving to Palestine ISD.
She attributes her sports success to her brother.
“My brother told me that just being a couch potato was a waste of height. So, I decided to try sports. Being a freshman, I made it onto the JV team, and I just loved it after that,” Nays said.
She had mixed emotions after singing.
“I’m very nervous, very excited and very anxious to start,” Nays commented.
TJC was not her first choice. She was accepted to University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on an academic scholarship. However, her love of sports enticed her to seek out the volleyball program at TJC.
“It’s amazing. They are number 8 in the nation right now so I’m excited,” Nays said about the TJC program she will be attending for college.
During her athletic career with Palestine, Nays played basketball and ran track.
“Basketball was a roller coaster ride, honestly, but being able to go to playoffs was really cool. Track was fun as well even though it ended short and I wasn’t able to go to regionals,” Nays said.
Coach Jasmine Hicks had Nays in the basketball and track programs. Nays is also a family friend of Hicks.
“She’s a great athlete. I watched her play at Elkhart this year. She’s an awesome middle blocker, and brings a lot of energy to her team. If we would have had her here at Palestine, our season could have been different,” Hicks commented.
Hicks said Nays has a focus for volleyball, but also did her best during the spring season sports.
Nays said, “I literally focus on volleyball, but if there is nothing going on, I’m in bed on my phone.”
Her advice for those seeking to reach their goals: “Never ever give up, work hard and stay dedicated.”
