TYLER, March 20, 2014-- The No. 9 ranked UT Tyler softball team completed a three-game sweep of No. 5 ranked East Texas Baptist on Wednesday, winning 4-3 in nine innings. The Patriots came from behind in the ninth-inning, and Whitney Burt delivered the game-winning single.
The game was tied at 2-2 as the team's entered the ninth-inning, but the Tigers' (17-4, 14-4) Lacy Liles hit a solo homerun, giving ETBU the 3-2 lead.
It would not last long, as UT Tyler's (20-1, 17-1) Mel Hinjosa would blast a one-out double, followed by a Kierin Stevens single to center with one out.
Senior Lauren Robenalt would deliver the first clutch-hit, knocking a single to left to score pinch-runner Brittany Perkins, tying the score at 3-3.
Karley Geiger would load the bases with a single of her own, setting the stage for Burt.
With the Tigers' defense drawn-in, Burt would single up-the-middle, just out of the reach of the ETBU-defender, ending the game 4-3.
ETBU took an early 2-0 lead in the second-inning, as Miranda Westbrook and Garcia would knock in a run apiece.
The Patriots would end the shutout in the bottom of the fifth, as Stevens doubled-in Shelby Shelton to cut the lead to 2-1.
Geiger would pick up her first RBI of the night on a single, scoring pinch-runner Amanda Lopez to tie the score after five.
Sophomore pitcher Kelsie Batten was a workhorse, going nine innings with two strikeouts and stellar play on defense.
Geiger led the way offensively, totaling four hits in five at-bats while Stevens finished with three hits and one RBI.
UT Tyler will now host No. 10th-ranked Linfield on Friday, in doubleheader action, beginning at 5 p.m. at the UT Tyler Ballpark.
