Mendez and Hinojosa power UT Tyler Softball sweep of PLU

TYLER, March 24, 2014— Mel Hinojosa and Jackie Mendez each belted a homerun, leading No. 9 UT Tyler softball to a 5-0 win over Pacific Lutheran on Sunday afternoon.  With the win, the Patriots are now 23-2 overall on the year.

In game one, Hinojosa got the scoring started in the bottom of the second, belting her fourth homerun of the season, putting the Patriots up 1-0.

Senior Lauren Robenalt would knock in the second run of the inning on a single up the middle, making the score 2-0 Patriots.

The hit for Robenalt was the 187th of her career, putting her in a tie for fourth-place all-time on the UT Tyler softball hit list.

In the third, Hinojosa would register another RBI, singling in Whitney Burt to make the score 3-0 UT Tyler.

Mendez would then step to the plate, belting her fourth homerun of the season, a two-run shot, making the score 5-0.

Pacific Lutheran (5-13) would have no answer, totaling just four hits and leaving six runners on-base.

UT Tyler pitcher Kelsie Batten picked up the win, her 13th of the year, striking out two while allowing no base on balls.

In game two, the Patriots powered their way past the Lutes, blasting 17 hits en route to a 8-0 win.

Burt got the scoring started in the bottom of the first, singling in Robenalt who notched another leadoff hit.

Freshman catcher Hinojosa continued her stellar day, doubling-in Burt to make the score 2-0 UT Tyler.

The game stayed at 2-0 over the next four innings, but the Patriots' bats came alive in the sixth.

UT Tyler started the inning with six hits in-a-row, including Ashley Webb's single that led to two runs, making the score 4-0 Patriots.

Hinojosa would once again come through, picking up another RBI on a single to right, followed by a Mendez single.

With the bases loaded, Vanessa Carrizales would pick up an RBI with a walk, followed by Shelby Shelton's RBI-single, making the score 7-0 Patriots.

Robenalt would then end the game with a RBI single, scoring Carrizales and ending the game at 8-0 because of the run-rule.

For the day, the Patriots would total 25 hits to the Lutes six, out-scoring PLU 13-0 in the doubleheader.

Freshman Alaina Kissinger picked up her 10th win of the season (10-0), allowing just two hits in six innings of work.

Hinojosa finished the day going 5-for-7 with four RBI, while Mendez totaled five hits in six at-bats with two RBI.

UT Tyler will host LeTourneau in American Southwest Conference action beginning at 4 p.m., on Friday, March 28, in Tyler.
