TYLER, November 21, 2013— The UT Tyler men's basketball team will open the season this Friday, November 22, at 7:30 p.m., against non-conference opponent Rhodes College. Last season, the Patriots set a new mark for wins in-a-season, going 18-8 overall and 13-6 in conference.
This season, UT Tyler has somewhat of a new look with Jamon Copeland taking over the head coaching duties along with assistant coach Marc Rozanski.
While the team features a host of newcomers on the court, the Patriots do welcome back a core of key players from last season, including Jordan Cannon, Joe Stephens, Travis Dykman and Tre Potter.
Dykman (12.9 ppg, 46% 3-pt) returns as the team's leading scorer from last season, garnering First Team ASC-East Division honors in his first season with the team.
Stephens, a senior from Flower Mound led the team in three-pointers made with 48 while averaging 10.2 ppg while shooting 47-percent from the field.
Cannon (11.5 ppg, 4.4 rpg), who was named to the ASC East All-Defensive Team and First Team East Division also returns to a guard-heavy squad that plans on playing an up-tempo style.
UT Tyler opens the season this Friday against the Rhodes College Lynx who are 1-1 on the year, falling 90-60 to Washington University-St. Louis and defeating Fontbonne 78-50.
The Patriots have played Rhodes once before, winning 82-71 last season in Memphis.
Friday, the game is a scheduled Orange Out, with fans encouraged to wear orange, get loud and support the Patriots.
UT Tyler will then face Hendrix at 3 p.m., on Saturday, as a part of Alumni Weekend.
The Warriors are currently 1-1 on the year, opening the year with an 88-80 win over Fontbonne and a 91-64 loss to Washington Univ.
