TYLER, January 2, 2014-- The UT Tyler men's and women's basketball teams return to action on Thursday, January 2, in Alpine, against Sul Ross State, opening a long, four-game road swing to open the New Year. The women are currently in first-place in the conference, while the men sit in third.
The first-place women (8-1, 6-0) are 6-0 for the first time in American Southwest Conference-play, leading the conference in points scored per game (82.1 ppg) while giving up just 63.9 ppg which leads the league.
UT Tyler also leads in scoring margin, winning its six conference-games by an average of 18.2 ppg, which is more than eight points per game higher than second-place Texas-Dallas.
Senior She'Cara Humphrey is having a stellar final season with the team, averaging 18.0 ppg in league-play, placing her in fifth-place in the ASC in scoring.
Teammate Brittney King also ranks in the top-10, pouring in 14.8 ppg while hauling-in 6.8 rebounds per game, which ranks 14th in the conference.
King also leads the ASC in field-goal percentage, hitting 63-percent of her shots from the field.
The ladies will open the year with a road-game against Sul Ross on Thursday, January 2, in Alpine, followed by games against Howard Payne (1/4), Mary Hardin-Baylor (1/9) and Concordia-Tx (1/11).
The men have won four-straight ASC contests, the longest streak in the conference, and find themselves in third-place in the standings.
UT Tyler has turned up the pressure on defense, moving to fifth-place in the league in scoring defense, giving up just 70.8 points per game, including just 64 points per game over the last four games.
Travis Dykman (13.3 ppg) ranks 19th in the ASC in scoring, while Joe Stephens ranks 25th in the league, averaging 11.8 points per game.
Point guard Bryce Kemp leads the ASC in steals (2.4 per game), while also leading the conference in free-throw percentage, making 89-percent of his charity tosses.
The men will open 2014 with a showdown with Sul Ross on Thursday, January 2, at 7:30 p.m., followed by matchups with Howard Payne (1/4), Mary Hardin-Baylor (1/9) and Concordia-Tx (1/11).
