LONGVIEW, June 16, 2014— LeTourneau University graduate student Garrett Methvin of the baseball team was recognized as the American Southwest Conference Distinguished Scholar-Athlete.
Methvin, a graduate student in education from Longview, led the YellowJackets to the best season in school history in 2014. Currently, Methvin maintains a perfect 4.0 grade-point average and has been a three-time ASC All-Academic Team selection. On the field, in 2014, he was a first team all-ASC honoree at first base and named to the ASC Baseball Championship All-Tournament Team after helping lead LeTourneau to its first-ever post-season championship in any sport as a league member. He led the YellowJackets in five categories including batting average (.375), slugging percentage (.544), on-base percentage (.459), RBI (34) and total bases (74).
The award recognizes student-athletes who achieve a high level of academic achievement (a 3.2 GPA or better) while competing as a starter or important reserve on their team. From that list - limited to one nominee per school in each ASC championship sport - the sports information directors from the 12 ASC member institutions select a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete in each sport.
