LONGVIEW, November 26, 2013— The LeTourneau University women’s soccer team was one of five American Southwest Conference members selected as fall 2013 recipients of Team Sportsmanship Awards by a vote of the 12 ASC Student-Athlete Advisory Committees, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
The award, in its seventh academic year, honors the member institution in each ASC championship sport that best displays positive qualities of sportsmanship and fair play from its student-athletes, coaches and fans throughout the season. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) from each of the conference's 12 member institutions vote on the recipients.
“From the first day of preseason this year we were talking with our girls about our identity as a team and who we are. Rachel (assistant coach) and I are proud of who these women are and what they have done and I think it is tremendously humbling to be recognized by our opponents in this way. Ultimately our desire is to be a positive reflection of our athletic department, LeTourneau, and most importantly Christ,” said LeTourneau University head women’s soccer coach Jamie Lindvall.
It is the first time in program history that the YellowJackets women’s soccer team has earned the annual honor. Also earning the honor were the Texas-Tyler for men's cross country and men’s soccer team, East Texas Baptist for women’s cross country and football and the co-winners for volleyball were Concordia and Texas-Dallas. The next ASC SAAC Team Sportsmanship Awards will be named after the 2013-14 basketball season.
