TYLER, May 2, 2014-- Facing elimination in its first American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament, the No. 8 seeded LeTourneau University softball team shutout No. 7 seed, Concordia, 9-0 on Thursday night, at SuddenLink Field in Tyler, Texas.
LeTourneau (17-25) pounded out 12 hits among eight-different players including three hits each from Anna Winter and Whitney Judd in the win. Plus, Winter had a RBI and two runs scored along with senior Jourdan Glover going 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
YellowJackets’ pitcher Taylor Thibodeaux improved to 8-7, holding the Tornados to four hits and just one base runner in scoring position for the complete game.
“This is the first time, this season that we did everything perfect,” said head coach Kate Bell. “I am proud of my team as they did everything that I asked them to do. If you are going to peak as a team, this was the perfect time for us to do it.”
The YellowJackets began the game with a triple by Megan Hill and a single by Judd. Then, with one out, Winter drove in Hill from third on a sacrifice fly for the early 1-0 lead. LeTourneau added to its lead in the second on a RBI single by Emily Ramsey in the second inning to stretch the advantage to 2-0.
In the bottom of the second, Concordia mounted a two-out threat in the second with back-to-back singles but an alert play by sophomore shortstop Taylor Kaderli tagged a base runner going from second to third on a ground ball.
In the fourth with a 2-0 lead, following a pitching change, LeTourneau capitalized on a pair of Tornados errors and four hits to score four more for a 6-0 lead. A RBI single by Judd in the sixth, a RBI triple by Glover and a RBI ground out by Chloe Cooper in the seventh provided the final margin.
The YellowJackets will next face the loser of the Texas-Tyler and Louisiana College contest on Friday, May 2, at 4 p.m.
Host No. 1 seed Texas-Tyler scored a run each in the fifth and sixth inning to rally for a 5-4 win over No. 8 seed, LeTourneau University in the quarterfinals of the American Southwest Conference Softball Championship Tournament. It was the fourth-straight one-run game between the two area rivals.
LeTourneau, who was playing in its first ASC Championship Tournament game, rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to score four times in the third to hold a 4-3 lead.
In the inning, the YellowJackets loaded the bases with one out. Courtney Matulis brought in Taylor Kaderli on a RBI single to left field for the first LeTourneau run of the contest to cut the deficit to 3-1. LeTourneau tied it at 3 after a RBI ground out by Anna Winter and a passed ball scored Whitney Judd from third. Jourdan Glover put LeTourneau up 4-3 on an infield RBI single.
For UT-Tyler (38-3), Raven Rodriguez drove in the game-tying run in the fifth on a single; then in the sixth with the bases loaded, she drove in the game-winning run on a fielder’s choice.
The YellowJackets’ Courtney Matulis, in relief of starter Kelli Parton, pitched the final 4.1 innings, scattering five hits and two runs – both earned in the loss. Kaderli had two hits for her eighth multi-hit game of the season to lead a six-hit attack for LeTourneau.
The Patriots’ Kelsie Batten went the distance to improve to 25-3 as she allowed six hits and struck out three in the win. Lauren Robenalt had two of the seven hits for Texas-Tyler in the win.
