LeTourneau University senior Curt Copeland of the baseball team was named the American Southwest Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
The Lake Worth, Florida native pitched a complete game on Saturday as the YellowJackets defeated No. 16/17 Concordia in the series opener, 2-1. Copeland held the Tornados to just three hits and matched a season-high six strikeouts in the win.
It is the third weekly ASC honor for Copeland in his career and the first of 2014. Copeland and LeTourneau is back in action on Friday, Apr. 4, at 2 p.m., when they take on Howard Payne University.
The LeTourneau University women’s golf team is in 4th place after shooting its best round of the season in the first round of the LeTourneau Spring Classic on Monday at Pinecrest Country Club in Longview.
YellowJackets’ freshman Kyleigh Scoggin is tied for 6th after shooting an 81. The 81 by Scoggin is a three-stroke improvement on her season-best round.
No. 8 California Lutheran leads the field after posting a 317 and the Regals are led by individual leader Jenna Gimbel, who a shot a 78 (+6).
For LeTourneau, freshman Alisa Wilson is tied for 18th (93), freshman Stephanie Mobley is tied for 22nd (96) and freshman Katelyn Breazeale is 25th (98). For Breazaeale, she lowered her season-best effort by eight strokes.
The tournament will wrap up on Tuesday, with another 18 holes as action gets underway at 8:30 a.m.
The LeTourneau University men’s golf team is in 10th after the first 36 holes of the LeTourneau Spring Classic at Pinecrest Country Club in Longview.
The YellowJackets shot a 36-hole total of 655 (330-325) as fellow ASC member Concordia holds the team lead with a 594 (300-294). The Tornados hold a 17-stroke advantage over fellow ASC member Mississippi College.
The top individual for LeTourneau is junior Will Park, who shot a 36-hole total of 159 (81-78) and is tied for 24th. His second round 78 ties the second best round of the season. Jack Cerosimo of Concordia shot a 1-under par 139 (68-71) to hold the individual lead.
For LeTourneau, sophomore Jacob Soerens shot a 160 (79-81) is tied for 28th, freshman Austin Gray is tied for 36th with a 164 (85-79), freshman Blake Smith is 45th with a 172 (85-87) and freshman Nathan Kleoppel is 50th with a 184 (88-96). As an individual, freshman Spencer Gregory is 48th with a 177 (87-90).
The tournament will wrap up on Tuesday, as the field will tee off at 8:30 a.m.
