LeTourneau University junior Ryan Bertram (Friendswood, Texas / Lamar University / Baytown Christian Academy) on Monday, was named as the American Southwest Conference Hitter of the Week. Bertram and the YellowJackets are coming off a week where he had three multi-hit games and two multi-RBI games as the YellowJackets posted a 4-1 record last week.
Bertram posted a .667 slugging percentage and a .550 on-base percentage. He led the LeTourneau offense with nine hits including a team-best three doubles. Bertram hit .500 at the plate (9-of-18), had five RBI and scored four times as the LeTourneau offense outscored their opponents by a 25-13 margin.
LeTourneau University men’s soccer head coach Matthew Haesecke has announced the first commitment – Brian Howell - for the 2014 season. The Germantown, Maryland native has been a standout goalkeeper at Urbana High School for head coach Scott Schartner.
As a three-year starter in 47 games, Howell posted 21 shutouts and an impressive 0.89 goals-against average. During his senior season, he allowed just five goals in 15 games with a 0.33 GAA en route to a 20-0 mark and a state title. His efforts earned him the area’s Defensive Player of the Year, all-conference and honorable mention all-state honors. They ended the season ranked No. 15 in the nation. As a junior, Urbana posted a 17-1-1 mark and lost in the state finals in overtime. Throughout his high school career, his team recorded a 60-5-1 mark.
Away from his high school team, Howell has played on one of the top club teams in Maryland – the Pachuca FC that was ranked third in the state and 59th in the nation. The team was Disney International Tournament semi-finalists.
