LONGVIEW, February 14, 2014— LeTourneau University senior Justin Jones had his 13th double double of the season in a 95-75 loss to Hardin-Simmons University on Thursday.
The YellowJackets (4-17, 3-15 ASC) lost to a hot shooting Hardin-Simons squad, who hit 47.5% of its shots from the field. Jones was joined in double digits by sophomore Ladaria Brown and junior Josh Thornton, who had 21 and 13 points, respectively.
The Cowboys (15-7, 15-4) extended its winning streak to nine games with the win. Four of five starters for Hardin-Simmons were in double digits including Derrick Jefferson, who poured in a game-high 31. Jefferson was 8-for-15 from the field and 13-for-18 at the free-throw line. Jefferson was joined in double digits by Charles Sams, who added 19; plus Titus Mims and John Barnes scored 16 and 10 points, respectively.
HSU began the contest with a 10-2 lead but LeTourneau came back to cut the deficit to 16-14 when Brown hit a 3 pointer with 13:20 left in the first 20 minutes. The YellowJackets eventually went ahead on five-consecutive points by Brown put LeTourneau ahead 24-22 with 8:45 left in the first half.
The game and momentum would swing back and forth as the two teams were tied on five occasions for the rest of the half. However, a 14-2 run to end the half by the home team put the Cowboys ahead 48-37 at the intermission. Jefferson had scored 15 of his 31 for Hardin-Simmons and for LeTourneau; Brown had 11 of his 21. In the second 20 minutes, LeTourneau would get as close as eight in the defeat.
The YellowJackets will next travel to Richardson to face No. 20 Texas-Dallas at 3 p.m., on Saturday, Feb. 15.
