RICHARDSON, April 1, 2014— The excitement and strong play from the series against the University of Texas-Dallas has led to two East Texas Baptist University softball players being named co-American Southwest Conference players of the week. Lacey Lindsey and Kelly Jo McLendon both were given the award for a second time this year.
McLendon was named the pitcher of the week as she put together a strong showing in the circle going 3-0 and picking up 13 strikeouts while only walking one batter in 67 batters faced. She threw a 2-hit shutout against regional opponent Pacific Lutheran, 5-0, with four strikeouts. She followed with another complete game win, 5-2, over Texas-Dallas in game one with three strikeouts and her only walk of the week. She then came in relief beginning in the 4th inning vs. Texas-Dallas in the final game of the series and took the win in extra innings with six strikeouts and only four hits. In two of the four innings she retired the side striking out the first three batters she faced. She had a 1.11 ERA on the week with three earned runs coming in the series vs. UTD.
Lindsey had another phenomenal week for ETBU hitting three home runs with her last being a walk-off solo shot in the bottom of 8th inning to come from behind over Texas-Dallas, 3-2, to sweep the series. The ball was hit over the right CF fence and pushed the netting back on the scoreboard, hitting the scoreboard. She was 2-of-4 in the final game vs. Texas-Dallas with a double and home run. She also hit a home run in the second game of the series, a 9-0 win over Texas-Dallas. In the series sweep of regional opponent Pacific Lutheran, she had two of the five RBI in the 5-0 win singling in the first run in the first inning and homering in the 3rd inning. In the first game vs. Texas-Dallas, a 5-2 win, Lindsey singled in two RBI to put ETBU ahead 4-1 in the 3rd inning giving the Tigers insurance runs. She is now on a six-game hitting streak and has nine home runs on the year which is second in the ASC. For the week she had a 1.125 slugging percentage and a .529 on-base percentage. In 16 at-bats, she never struck out, too.
ETBU is currently 23-5 on the year and 17-4 in the American Southwest Conference ranked ninth in last week’s NFCA national poll. To follow ETBU softball go to @ETBU_Softball on Twitter.
