Cassard tabbed as new Assistant Baseball Coach

TYLER, July 28, 2014— Gerald Cassard has been named as the UT Tyler baseball Pitching Coach and Recruiting Coordinator, Head Coach Chris Bertrand announced on Friday. Cassard comes from Nicholls State in Louisiana, where he served as Director of Baseball Operations in 2013.

Cassard, who brings 17 years of college coaching experience to Tyler, served five years as a head coach at NAIA program Loyola from 2007-2012.

While at Loyola, the Wolf Pack played for the 2010 GCAC Tournament Championship, produced 3 Rawlings Gold Glove Award Winners, produced one All Louisiana First Team player, 11 NAIA Scholar Athletes, and had a team GPA that was ranked in the Top-15 nationally for three consecutive years.

Prior to his stint at Loyola, "Gee" was the pitching coach at The University of New Orleans in 2006, helping the Privateers to their first winning season in five years.

Cassard also helped UNO improve the team earned run average by two points, produced three Sunbelt Conference Pitchers of the Week, and one First Team All-Louisiana and All-Region Pitcher.

Head coach Chris Bertrand, who will be in his third season at the helm in 2014-15, commented on the hire, saying, “I could not be any more excited to welcome Gee to the UT-Tyler Baseball Family.  I sincerely feel like we are lucky to have someone with his experience, knowledge, and network join our program.

Bertrand added, "We have been friends for a long time, and I have always admired his abilities as a coach, and respected the way his teams played and competed.  I am confident that our players are going to love him, and I can’t wait to get started with him.  We welcome with open arms Gee, Courtney, and Cruz to the Patriots!”

Cassard will look to help lead the Patriots to their eighth-straight American Southwest Conference postseason, while setting their sights on winning their fourth ASC Championship in program history.
