Batten perfect, Patriots win 6-0 in opening game

TYLER, April 26, 2013-- The UT Tyler softball team opened the 2013 American Southwest Conference championship tournament with a 6-0 win over Concordia.  In the win, freshman hurler Kelsie Batten threw a perfect game in the circle, allowing no runners aboard.

Both starting pitchers started the game on-a-roll, going three full innings without giving up a hit.

In the fourth, Ashley Endsley started the inning with a double to left-center, picking up the first hit of the game.

Later in the inning, Joey Cronin stepped to the plate with the bases-loaded and quickly gave UT Tyler a 4-0 lead on a grand slam to right field.

With the homerun, Cronin tied the ASC career hit record with 247 hits all-time, tying UT Tyler assistant coach Christy Gipson who set the record while playing for ETBU.

The Patriots would add two more runs in the fifth, with a Brittney Batten double and a bases loaded hit-by-pitch for Karley Geiger, making the score 6-0.

Batten was historic in the circle, going seven innings with seven strikeouts, zero walks and zero hits.

B. Batten led the Patriots with two hits, going 2-for-3 while Cronin finished with four RBIs.

UT Tyler will now take on west division two-seed Mary Hardin-Baylor at 7 p.m. tonight in Farmers Branch.
