Angelina College selected to host Conference Baseball, Softball Tournaments in May

LUFKIN, September 13, 2013-- Following the annual fall meeting of the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) Region XIV conference representatives, athletic directors and coaches voted to have Angelina College host the upcoming conference baseball and softball tournaments scheduled to take place in May of 2014.

Region XIV consists of community colleges throughout the East Texas and Western Louisiana region.

AC’s baseball and softball complex was completed in 2009, and since then, the college has hosted tournaments there on three previous occasions – twice for softball, and once for baseball. However, the 2014 event will mark the first time AC has hosted both of the tournaments in the same season.

Those tournaments are expected to draw in excess of 2,000 players, coaches, fans and scouts to the Lufkin area for each five-day tournament span. Several coaches and athletic directors cited both the AC facilities and the Lufkin community’s hospitality as the big reasons for their votes.

Angelina College president Dr. Larry Phillips said the decision is testament to the college’s and the city’s reputations.

"We’re pleased that the other schools in our conference chose to return to Lufkin and Angelina College for both tournaments this year,” Phillips said. “Not only are we centrally located within Region XIV, with great facilities, but it is a tribute to the hard work that our coaches and athletics staff puts into organizing our tournaments.

“Even more, the hospitality of our Lufkin community has shown through in a way that people from other areas obviously have noticed.”

Official dates for the tournaments will be announced later.
