ATHENS, August 24, 2013--What happens when a big dreaming football coach and even bigger dreaming business owner put their heads together?
In summer 2012, Paul Benson, owner of Athens based business Virtual Communication Specialists, was visiting with Trinity Valley Community College head football coach Brad Smiley. “We were discussing doing something big to get the community even more involved with the Cardinal football team.”
A short time later, the opportunity to do so came to fruition.
In pre-season polling that year, T.V.C.C was ranked seventh, with the Iowa Western Community College Reivers ranked sixth. The stars were aligning for the big event Benson and Smiley were looking for.
Battle in the Valley, sponsored by Virtual Communication Specialists was born. The idea was to put a “bowl” game at the beginning or during a season to raise excitement over the Community Colleges’ teams. Benson immediately began putting together a plan for the Reivers to travel to Athens to play. The game was exciting and the Iowa Western Reivers dominated the 2012 season, becoming the National Junior College Athletic Association Champions.
While the first year was small, Battle in the Valley is growing in its second year. On Saturday, August 24, there will be festivities nearly all day all Bruce Field, in Athens. All the fun will be housed in a 600 square foot tent across from Bruce Field.
Virtual Communication Specialists’ Pre-Game Tailgating Festivities Include:
Celebrate the kick-off of the 2013 TVCC Cardinals’ football season by coming out for the tailgate and staying for one exciting game between the Trinity Valley Cardinals and the Iowa Western Reivers.
Tailgating will begin at 12, noon, at Bruce Field. Game time is 6:00 p.m. Game tickets are $5 at the gate.
