Wallings Pharmacy closes doors after 87 years of family operation

GRAPELAND, August 29, 2014—An 87 year-old, family run, local business is closing its doors, according to KYYK News Director Gary Richards.

City Drug Store was purchased by Otto E. Walling in 1927, and its name changed to Wallings Drug Store. Walling's son, Dan, grew up in the store and decided to pursue a career in that field for himself. Dan graduated from Pharmacy school, became licensed in 1951, and served for a bit in the US Air Force before marrying his wife Elaine and then entering into a partnership with his father in 1954. The partnership remained intact until the passing of Otto Wallings in 1973. When Dan registered the business as a sole proprietorship after the passing of his father, the name was changed from Wallings Drug Store to Wallings Pharmacy.

After serving the public for 87 years, Wallings Pharmacy will be closing its doors. KYYK’s Gary Richards spoke to Dan Walling about the rich history of the business and his thoughts on the closure. Click below for more.
