VA2K Walk, Roll promotes wellness, support for homeless Veterans

TEMPLE, May 16, 2014— Coinciding with National Employee Health and Fitness Day, the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS) is hosting a VA2K Walk and Roll event on Wednesday, May 21, 2013, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event encourages employees, Veterans and the public to join in a fun, short walk to promote health but also support homeless Veterans.  The event will include music, healthy snacks, and giveaways (while supplies last).  Those wishing to participate may select one of the locations listed below.

“Worksite wellness activities enhance employee engagement and contribute to a more productive and healthy workforce,” said Sallie A. Houser-Hanfelder, FACHE, Director.  “Last year, VA’s 2K events across our Central Texas Veterans Health Care System were extremely successful, and this year, we intend to collect even more in-kind donations and involve more participants in support of our homeless Veterans.”

The CTVHCS event is just one of many 2Ks taking place May 21 at other VA facilities across the country.  There is no registration fee, but employees and others participating in the event are asked to donate an item for a homeless Veteran; such as new underwear, T-shirts and socks (in unopened packages), toiletry items (alcohol free), phone cards, or nonperishable single-serving food items.  Voluntary Service will be on hand to accept in-kind and cash donations to be used to help carry out existing VA programs for homeless Veterans.  However, there is no requirement for a donation in order to participate.

Last year, donations nationwide totaled more than $300,000 with more than 25,000 participants at 170 VA facilities.

Other individuals and agencies will join the VA2K Walk and Roll. At the Palestine CBOC  location other  participating groups will be the local Veteran Service Office, local VA volunteer service, and various community services such as home health groups and local state agencies.
