TYLER, October 14, 2013-- The University of Texas at Tyler will hold an art history lecture on campus, Dr. Clair Robertson, assistant professor of art history and lecture co-coordinator, announced.

The public event will be 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 18, in the UT Tyler Fine Arts Complex, room 112.

Dr. Onoyom Upkong, a specialist in African art, will discuss “Events Politicized in Art.”

“I will talk about such art influence on society similar to those seen to have influenced rule since the emergence of the first known dynastic culture, through succeeding civilizations. In this respect, I shall utilize (Nigerian artist) dele jegede’s work to account for the many ways in which visual art has been used as an instrument of rule in postcolonial Nigeria,” Upkong said.

The UT Tyler Departments of Art and Art History and History and Political Science serve as sponsor.
