UT Tyler Industrial Technology Student Chapter receives top honors at national conference

TYLER, December 17, 2013— The University of Texas at Tyler’s Association ofTechnology, Management and Applied Engineering student chapter and industrial technology program were both recognized at the 2013 ATMAE Conference, Dr. Jerry W. Gilley, College of Business and Technology interim dean, announced.

The UT Tyler ATMAE student chapter earned the Outstanding Student Chapter Award for the third consecutive year, a feat that has never been previously achieved in the 45 years of the association’s existence.

Outstanding student chapters are recognized based on the number of ATMAE student members in the chapter and the range and quality of activities sponsored by the chapter.

In addition, Danny Belknap of Van won the Virtual Welding competition in his first conference attendance, bringing home a new MIG welder from the Lincoln Electric Company, sponsors of the competition. NoahMagouirk of Whitehouse also placed third in the Technology Challenge competition.

The UT Tyler chapter competed with more than 50 other ATMAE student chapters across the country to earn these honors.

“I am really proud of my students for receiving this year’s Outstanding Student Chapter Award as well as winning the virtual welding competition and placing in theTechnology Challenge. They worked really hard throughout the year and sacrificed their free time to coordinate or assist with numerous community service projects, fundraising activities and social events,” said Dr. Heshium Lawrence, assistant professor and chapter faculty adviser.

Other UT Tyler ATMAE student chapter members are Mae McDonald of Henderson, Jordan McDowell of Forney and Chris Johnson, Daniel Lee, Josh Sanders and Brandy Cate, all of Tyler.
