Update: SCSO releases additional information on suspect accused of killing wife

SMITH CO., February 26, 2014— UPDATE: Relating to the arrest of Adrian Ray Mata, age 29, in connection with the murder of his wife, Jennifer Mata, age 30, on Feb. 25, there was an incident which took place on CR 333 where a report was made of shots being fired near Mata’s residence. This occurred at approximately 8:00 a.m., prior to the murder. This incident was not reported to the Sheriff’s Office at the time of the event, but was learned during the investigation.

The Smith County Sheriff’s Office is still searching for the medium gray PT Cruiser in which the suspect fled.

Also, a pistol was recovered during Mata’s arrest on Tuesday afternoon. The Sheriff’s Office will not elaborate as to whether it is the murder weapon. The pistol is currently being analyzed at the Texas Department of Public Safety Laboratory.

The SCSO does expect additional charges against Adrian Ray Mata to be pursued and will announce those when they are filed.

TYLER, February 26, 2014--At 11:07 a.m., the Smith County Sheriff's Office responded to a call of a shooting on County Road 333, just north of Loop 323 in Tyler.

Adrian Ray Mata, age 29, allegedly shot his wife in the head and then fled the scene. At 2:40 p.m., Mata was located at a residence on Serenity Way, in The Villages, off of FM 2661. He was taken into custody without incident by the Smith County Sheriff's Office.

His wife, Jennifer Mata, age 30, was taken to ETMC where she died of her injuries shortly after 3 p.m.

Mata faces a charge of murder and possibly faces additional charges. He has been booked in to the Smith County Jail. Bail has not been set.
