Tyler school to host Child Abuse Awareness Ceremony

TYLER, April 4, 2013--April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. Tomorrow, the St. Louis Early Childhood Center will host the annual Smith County Child Abuse Awareness Program sponsored by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. The program will pay tribute to the victims of abuse and neglect.

Representatives from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, Tyler ISD, Tyler ISD Board of Trustees, Tyler City Council, Smith County Sheriff’s Office, Northeast Texas Disproportionality Advisory Board, and the Child Advocacy Center will speak during the program.

During the ceremony, Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith will read a proclamation declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Smith County. Tyler ISD Head Start students will perform a song and at the end of the ceremony a balloon release will take place to honor those who lost their lives due to child abuse.

Last year, a total of 212 Texas children died because of abuse or neglect at the hands of their parents or guardians, three of those were in Smith County. More than 1,591 investigations were initiated in Smith County alone with 493 children being confirmed victims of abuse or neglect.
