Tyler Public Library starts Advisory Council, Movie Matinees for Teens

TYLER, September 6, 2013—The Tyler Public Library is introducing two special additions just for Teens. Teens will enjoy taking part in the new Teen Advisory Council, and participating in teen-only, free movie matinees.

The Tyler Public Library is reaching out to area teens to give them a voice in Library happenings and to make reading a larger part of their lives. The Library is starting a Teen Advisory Council, which gives teens the opportunity to help Library staff plan programs and events, earn volunteer hours, review young adult books prior to their release and ultimately make the Library a better place for teens.

The first meeting of the Teen Advisory Council will take place on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m., in the Library auditorium. The meeting is open to anyone 12 to 18 years old.

“We have many great youth volunteers and are excited to get them involved in what we can offer them and their peers,” said Youth Services Librarian Linda Gray. “This is one more way for them to gain volunteer hours for service groups like National Honor Society, and benefit their Library.”

To become a volunteer for any City of Tyler agency, go to www.VolunteerTyler.com or call 903-531-1100.

In addition, The Tyler Public Library is offering a free movie matinee for teens on the first Saturday of every month in their Library auditorium. The first event will be Saturday, Sept. 7, at 2 p.m., and is open to anyone 12 to 18 years old. The movies shown will be voted on by the Library’s Teen Advisory Council whose regularly scheduled meeting immediately precedes the movie matinee.

“Movies can be a great way to bring teens together. We want them to realize the Library can be a wonderful place for them.” says Youth Services Librarian Linda Gray. “All the movies chosen will be PG or PG-13, but within the interest area of teens. Our auditorium offers a true ‘big screen’ environment, without the high price.”
