Tyler PD offers holiday safety tips to help avoid vehicle burglary, home invasion

TYLER, November 30, 2015—As the holiday season approaches, Tyler Police Department would like to remind shoppers to take extra precautions to avoid being the victim of a crime.

Tyler PD reminds shoppers to take the following precautions:

  • Always lock your car
  • Do not leave valuables in plain site
  • Place gifts in the trunk or cover them
  • If you have too many gifts, drop them off at home before you continue shopping

“It doesn’t take much to break that window, and then they’re in your vehicle and they’re taking your items,” said Tyler Police Department Public Information Officer Don Martin. “We just warn people to be careful, look for any suspicious activity. If you see people out there that look like they’re about to do something that’s no good, then give us a call and let us check them out.”

In addition, to help avoid home invasion, Officer Martin recommends installing an alarm system as well as using security surveillance cameras.

“The surveillance camera – yes, they’re definitely a plus for us,” said Martin. “We use social media to blast those photos out, and usually we get them recognized pretty quickly.”

KYYK’s Gary Richards spoke with Officer Martin about the issue, as well as home invasions. Click below to hear more.
