TYLER, July 15, 2013--Sean M. Koch, 2013 Robert E. Lee graduate, has been selected for the James R. Carns Memorial Scholarship. Koch, who will attend Tyler Junior College, was selected by the scholarship committee at Robert E. Lee led by Celia Tucker, career/school counselor.
Rick Carns and his siblings established the fund, which was the second endowed scholarship fund within the Tyler ISD Foundation.
“I am extremely grateful,” said Koch. “I have been accepted at and plan to attend Tyler Junior College.”
“The James Richard Carns Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the life and memory of a strong, smart, creative, loving, and caring man,“ said his daughter, Rebecca Pitts. “We have established the memorial endowment in hopes that his legacy will encourage young people to follow their dreams, work hard and be determined to excel in their chosen career path.”
James Richard Carns grew up in Tyler, Texas, attending James S. Hogg Middle School and graduated from Tyler High in 1958. After working several years as a market manager, he graduated from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M University-Commerce) in 1970. Continuing his interest in vocational training, he taught at Texas State Technical Institute in Waco, Texas. He owned his own grocery store, continued higher education, and was a talented craftsman/wood-working business owner/artist.
“We celebrate in many ways with this scholarship. The fund is endowed so it will be providing higher education scholarships to Tyler ISD grads long after we are all gone. The name of James R. Carns will live forever in the students and young learners,“ said Larry Goddard, Tyler ISD Foundation executive director.
Goddard stated that Rick Carns with Petty’s Irrigation gives the amount of the scholarship so that the interest is invested into the corpus of the fund.
“We have not touched the donations made in honor of James Carns, so the fund is endowed.” said Goddard. “With donors such as the family members of the Carns, our board of directors and staff are collaborative stewards of the memorial donations and will make sure the donations remain here in perpetuity.”
