TYLER, March 17, 2014— Patricia Lewis, principal at Jones Elementary MST Academy, has been selected to be an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Elementary International Staff Developer. Mrs. Lewis was selected for the honor through a nationwide screening process that included personal and professional reviews, as well as the completion of professional training courses in the implementation of AVID Elementary.
AVID Elementary is a foundational component of the AVID College Readiness System that seeks to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. The kindergarten through postsecondary system has turned thousands of underperforming students into confident, college-going scholars and graduates.
“Individuals selected as AVID Staff Developers have proven their ability to successfully implement the AVID methodologies and take the strategies school wide to impact all students,” said Tyler ISD AVID Coordinator Lillian Brooks. “Mrs. Lewis was selected as an AVID national staff developer because she has implemented the AVID system throughout the Jones Elementary School campus, thus serving as a model for other schools who are working to create a college-going culture.”
This summer, Mrs. Lewis will facilitate AVID Elementary Professional Development sessions in Tampa, Florida.
