TYLER, November 15, 2013— During the regularly held City Council meeting on Wednesday, the Tyler City Council approved the adoption of the new Bergfeld Park Master Plan.
The Master Plan addresses five areas to be renovated at the Park including: the playground, tennis courts, amphitheater, Splasher area and landscaping. Plans for the five areas have been developed so that they may be completed in stages as the funding becomes available.
Plans call for new playground equipment, renovated tennis courts, removing some of the amphitheater fixed seats to create a grassy picnic area for families, and the creation of a landscape barrier to separate children in the splash area from the traffic on Broadway.
In March, 2013, the Tyler Parks and Recreation Department was approached by a group of residents in the Bergfeld Park neighborhood, who were interested in sponsoring a Master Plan for the park. Upon approval, the group raised the money for the master plan and chose MHS Planning and Design, LLC of Tyler, Texas, to create a plan for the property.
A focus group consisting of individuals with either a home or business property in the Bergfeld area met several times to discuss the direction of the plan with MHS and City staff. Additionally, a public meeting was held on Sept. 5 at the Bergfeld Park amphitheater to further discuss the direction of the project. More than 60 people from the surrounding neighborhood attended. After receiving input from the various groups, a final Master Plan and budget was developed.
On Oct. 28, MHS Planning and Design presented the final version of the Master Plan for review and comment at the City of Tyler Park Board Meeting. After favorable discussion, the Park Board unanimously approved to recommend sending the Master Plan to Council for final approval. Funding for construction of the specialty park could be initiated from a variety of public/private partnerships.
