TYLER, May 1, 2014--Two John Tyler High School seniors were awarded with Dell Scholars Program scholarships recently. Each student will receive $20,000 over the next six years for college. Tonyae Evans and Cristal Galindez were among 300 students nationwide to receive the honor.
To qualify, students must participate in an approved college readiness program in grades 11 and 12. Tyler ISD’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Program is one of these programs. AVID focuses on providing access to four-year colleges for students capable of completing a college preparatory path, so that they achieve success in a rigorous curriculum.
“Tonyae and Cristal are so deserving of this incredible honor,” Lillian Brooks, Tyler ISD AVID Coordinator, said. “Their hard work and commitment to academic success is inspiring. I am so proud of both of these AVID students.”
Tonyae is a member of the National Honor Society and in the top 10 percent of her class. She is a champion mixed-doubles tennis player, an accomplished cellist and a Texas Bank and Trust Junior Member among other leadership roles. She plans to attend Stephen F. Austin State University.
Cristal is in the top 2 percent of her class, a member of the National Junior Honor Society, a member of the Texas Bank and Trust Student Board of Directors and is also a member of many student leadership organizations. Cristal plans to attend Tyler Junior College.
The goal of the Dell Scholars Program is to improve the outcome of underserved students through the opportunities a bachelor’s degree can provide. The program provides not only financial assistance, but also resources and mentoring to ensure that students have the support they need to earn a college degree.
The Dell Scholars Program is funded by the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation, a private family foundation that is not affiliated with the computer company Dell, Inc. The Michael & Susan Dell Foundation has committed nearly $850 million to programs that foster high-quality public education since the foundation was established in 1999.
