TVCC Choir to perform first fall concert, 'A Choral Palate' on Oct. 13

ATHENS, October 2, 2013-- The richness and depth found in a number of musical pieces will be put on display by the Trinity Valley Community College Choir next week, during its first fall concert of the 2013-14 school year.

The choir will perform “A Choral Palate: The Many Colors of Music,” on Oct. 13, at 3 p.m., at Dogwood Church in Athens. The performance is free to the public and sponsored by the Lakeland Community Concert Association and the Cain Foundation.

The performance will feature two of the music department’s newest instructors, Kristen Huggins and Mark Reeves. Huggins, an Athens native, is TVCC’s new adjunct voice instructor and a graduate of the Boston Conservatory. Reeves, who worked with McGilvray upon his arrival at the college 15 years ago, is an adjunct accompanist who has served as music minister at First United Methodist Church in Canton the past three decades.

“We’re going to be doing some things that people know, but we’re also going to be doing some new things,” TVCC Choir Director Dr. Byron McGilvray said. “This performance will be exploring the different colors of sound – the textures, the thickness.”

Dr. McGilvray said selections will include a wide range of pieces, from contemporary to sacred and spiritual. The choir will perform two pieces by Daniel Gawthrop – “Night, Sleep, Death and the Stars,” and a piece specially composed for the TVCC Choir in memory of Ginger Murchison, “Lord, lift my soul.” There will also be a medley of songs about trains.

The choir will also host its annual Christmas concert at Dogwood Church on December 1.

Dogwood Church is located at 6467 Farm-to-Market Road 2494 in Athens, three miles west of the college.

Dr. Byron McGilvray and the TVCC Choir will perform for the first time this semester on Sunday, Oct. 13, at Dogwood Church in Athens.
