Train accident in Cherokee County

RUSK, June 13, 2017 – At 9:45 a.m., Tuesday morning the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to a female injured as a result of jumping from a northbound freight train. The location was on County Road 4807 South of Troup.

At 10:07 a.m. the Sheriff’s office received a call from a motorist and was told that something was on the railroad track near the intersection of US 79 and County Road 3302 west of Jacksonville. The Sheriff’s office then reported the calls to Union Pacific Railroad.

A body of a white male was found on the tracks west of Jacksonville and appeared to have been killed after being run over by the train. The female that was injured by jumping from the train said her friend had fallen from the train earlier.

The female was taken to Tyler by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries. The two apparently had been riding on top of one of the rail cars when the man fell. Another north bound train had arrived on the scene and stopped west of the scene by the time officers arrived.

Justine of the Peace Phillip Grimes held an inquest and ordered the body be taken to Tyler for autopsy. The identification of the two individuals has not been confirmed at this time. Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Union Pacific Law Enforcement and Texas Rangers are investigating the incident.
