TYLER, April 8, 2014— For the third year in a row, Tyler Junior College met -- and surpassed -- the goal for its 50 Gallon Challenge Blood Drive.
During the last week of March, TJC students, faculty, staff and community members – 449 in all – rolled up their sleeves in record numbers, raising more than 56 gallons of blood.
“One pint of blood can save up to three lives,” said Lauren Tyler, TJC director of student activities, “so this 50 Gallon Challenged helped save up to 1,300 lives.
“That’s an amazing statistic, and we owe it all to the generous people who gave and to those who helped spread the word about the blood drive.”
Tyler said she learned that blood donated from last year’s TJC drive was used to help save lives of those affected by the explosion last April in West, Texas.
TJC holds the challenge each year, in conjunction with Carter BloodCare.
TJC's next 50 Gallon Challenge is set for Monday-Friday, March 23-27.
