TJC science center to host Astronomy Day on Saturday, Oct. 19

TYLER, October 16, 2013-- Saturday is Astronomy Day at the Center for Earth & Space Science Education at Tyler Junior College.

Admission to the center is free all day, however regular charges apply to shows in the dome theater.

Doors open at 10:30 a.m. The center is located at 1411 E. Lake St., on the TJC main campus.

“The Astronomical Society of East Texas will have activities for all ages, and we’ll have telescopes set up in the courtyard for solar viewing, weather permitting,” said Dr. Tom Hooten, TJC physics professor and science center director.

On Saturday evening, the ASET will host a star party with telescopes outside. The live night sky will also be projected in the dome theater.

“Origins: The Dawn of Dinosaurs” is the current science center exhibit which houses life-size dinosaur models, their mammal-like prey, original fossil wood and volcanic ash. Visitors can explore radiometric dating, evidence of the ancient environment, and clues to the Triassic climate.
