TJC hosting 50 Gallon Challenge blood drive this week

TYLER, March 20, 2013— Carter BloodCare recently named Tyler Junior College the 2012 College of the Year, and TJC’s 50 Gallon Challenge blood drive was named 2012 Drive of the Year. TJC is attempting to repeat that 50-gallon goal in this year's blood drive with Carter BloodCare from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., today-Friday.

Carter BloodCare is set up on the 2nd floor of Rogers Student Center of the TJC main campus, with a mobile site outside of TJC’s Pirtle Technology, at the corner of East Lake Street and South Mahon Avenue.

“This is not your typical blood drive,” said Lauren Tyler, TJC director of student activities. “This is a challenge to get 50 gallons, which means we will need more than 400 donors to be able to reach this goal.” Last year, TJC surpassed its original 50-gallon goal by raising 52.175 gallons of blood.

Door prizes are given for every 50th-person milestone, and every person who donates will be entered to win. All donors also receive free food and a T-shirt.

“One donation can save up to three lives,” Tyler said, “so 50 gallons could potentially safe up to 1,200 lives.”

The community is invited to participate in the blood drive.
