Second suspect named, arrested in connection with American Inn homicide

TYLER, June 24, 2013—On June 21, Tyler Police Investigators obtained an arrest warrant for a second suspect, Darian Pilkington, age 19, of Tyler, in connection with the June 15, homicide that occurred at the American Inn located at 1800 W. Erwin in Tyler. 

Judge Kennedy signed the warrant for Capital Murder and set the bond at $750,000.  Investigators were able to make contact with Pilkington, who turned himself in at around 4:00 p.m.

The warrant for Lawrence Murphy is still outstanding.

TYLER, June 20, 2013—Police have identified a suspect in the homicide that occurred at the American Inn at 1800 West Erwin, in Tyler. A warrant has been issued for Lawrence Charles Murphy, Jr., age 20, by Judge Jack Skeen, charging Murphy with Murder. Bond on the warrant is set at $1,000,000.  Murphy Jr. is approximately 5’08” tall and weighs around 170 pounds.

Murphy Jr. has access to a 1989 Chevrolet Caprice bearing Texas license plate CX3G877.Since a firearm was used, Murphy Jr. is considered to be armed and extremely dangerous.

The investigation continues to determine the identities of the other persons in the room when the incident occurred.

 

Original Story: Update 1

TYLER, June 17, 2013--Tyler Investigators have identified the victim who was murdered at the American Inn Motel located at 1800 W. Erwin, on Saturday, June 15, around 4:35 a.m. The victim is identified as Wesley Scott Lester, age 26, of Tyler.

Investigators believe that Lester was involved in the sale of narcotics in his motel room before he was killed by the suspects.  Surveillance video obtained from the motel indicates that four, black, male suspects walked onto the motel property and went to the victim’s room.  Two suspects entered Lester’s room while the two other suspects remained outside as lookouts.  Investigators determined that Lester and two other subjects were in the room at the time of the shooting.  After gunfire erupted and Lester was shot, all four suspects ran from the scene toward W. Erwin Street.

Anyone with information about the suspects involved in this crime is urged to contact the Tyler Police Department, at 903-531-1000, or Crime Stoppers at 903-597-CUFF (2833).  Crime Stoppers will pay up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest and charges filed against the suspects in this case or any felony case.

TYLER, June 17, 2013--Tyler Police responded to what is believed to be a Homicide at American Inn Motel, 1800 W. Erwin Street, on June 15, at approximately 6:55 a.m.

According to police, they received a call reporting a shooting victim was deceased inside room #218 at that location. Patrol officers arrived and confirmed that there was a white male deceased inside the room. No other persons were contacted inside the room on arrival to the scene. Initial appearance at the scene depicts the victim was shot at least one time. No identification is being released pending positive ID of the victim and next of kin notification.

TPD is in the early stage of the investigation and additional information will be released when available.  TPD Major Crimes and Tech. Service Investigators responded to the scene and the investigation in on-going.
