School bus, two other vehicles involved in fatal accident

VAN ZANDT CO., May 22, 2013--Early this morning three vehicles, including a school bus, were involved in an accident on FM 571, near CR 3804, in Van Zandt County.

According to Jean Dark of the Department of Public Safety, the school bus was traveling southbound on FM 571. Two vehicles, a pickup truck and a Toyota Camry, were travelling northbound. The Toyota Camry swerved into the oncoming southbound lane of traffic. In an attempt to take evasive action, the school bus swerved to the left, while the Camry driver did the same. The driver of the pickup also attempted to take evasive action, and all three vehicles were involved in the crash.

The driver of the Toyota Camry, identified as Fernando Rios, age 33, of Wills Point, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pickup was not injured.

The driver of the school bus was treated for non life-threatening injuries and released. As a precaution, three of the students on the school bus were taken to area hospitals. They received treatment for non life-threatening injuries, and were released.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
