Scam in Anderson Co. requires 'winners' to send money before receiving prize money

ANDERSON CO., November 27, 2013—A new scam is circulating, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.

The scam, which involves a letter made to look as if it originated from Publisher’s Clearinghouse, involves informing the victim they have won a contest. The scam involves the victim sending money, in order to claim their prize money. Sheriff Taylor says this is a typical kind of scam.

“That’s never going to work,” Sheriff Taylor said. “If you have to send money because you won money…you didn’t win any money.”

Sheriff Taylor urges the public to be wary of “prize notifications,” and to avoid sending money or giving personal information to anyone.
