TYLER, June 18, 2014— Rose City Farmers Market is one of 12 farmers markets to receive a Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) From Market to Menu grant this year. TDA’s GO TEXAN program strives to put more local food on Texas tables by connecting farmers markets, local growers, and Texas restaurants.
Tyler’s first From Market to Menu event is slated for this Saturday, June 21, at 10:00 a.m. GO TEXAN Executive Chef Philipp Norsetter of Juls will be gathering the ingredients for his Grilled Peach Salad with Goat Cheese and Grilled Flatbread straight from the tables of Rose City Farmers Market members.
George Philley Peaches, Good Roots Garden, Neverland Garden, Red Moon Farm, Yeehaw Farm, Annie Moo Moo’s Gourmet Goodies, Harmony Hollow Apiaries, Haute Goat Creamery, M+K Provisions, and The Waldo Way Dairy Farm will supply the produce and other foods needed for the recipes.
Chef Norsetter will demonstrate how to prepare the salad from start to finish, and everyone will get to sample the finished product. As a bonus, the first 20 customers at the event will be able to purchase a goodie bag containing all of the local ingredients for the recipe.
Market Director Carmen Sosa expressed her excitement about the grant, noting that “our farmers market was one of only twelve markets to receive this grant—thanks to our being TDA certified and having such a fabulous relationship with a locally minded restaurant like Juls, our GO TEXAN partner. This is such a great way of sharing how fun and easy it can be to eat locally and seasonally.”
The market at Juls is open every Tuesday and Saturday, from 8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m., at 7212 Old Jacksonville Hwy. The market is also open every Thursday, from 8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m., at 723 N. Broadway, in the Salvation Army parking lot.
The mission of the East Texas Community Food Coalition is to encourage good health through better access to fresh and delicious food, and to support sustainable agriculture, community place-making, and the local economy.
