PALESTINE, May 22, 2013--The Palestine Resource Center for Independent Living (PRCIL) will be hosting the monthly diabetic support group on Thursday, June 20, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. Teresa Richey, RN, PHN with Texas Department of State Health Services will be speaking on “Diabetes and Sickle Cell Anemia Disease."
Diabetes affects nearly 21 million people in the United States and the incident rate is especially high in African Americans. Approximately 13 percent of African Americans age 20 or older have diabetes, a rate that is nearly twice that of non-Hispanic whites. Sickle cell anemia, a hereditary blood disorder, is also specific to African Americans and when coupled with diabetes, can have devastating health effects.
