PALESTINE, JANUARY 25, 2018 -- The Palestine Police Department’s UNIDOS program will host its first public event, a free “Celebration of Our Community,” on Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Palestine YMCA, 5500 N. Loop 256, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Saturday’s health and safety fair will feature all kinds of free information and entertainment for everyone. Spanish translator volunteers will be available to translate for businesses and non-profit organizations.
“We want to make sure anyone who wants to participate would be able to communicate with our Spanish speaking residents, so we are providing translators for them. One of the goals for UNIDOS is to provide information that most of us may take for granted,” Palesitne Police Chief Andy Harvey said.
There will also be entertainment for all ages, with story time for the kids, face painting, a piñata, and more! Free food will also be available. The event will feature Los Unicos Mariachis, a mariachi group comprised of students from the W.E. Greiner Middle School Exploratory Arts Academy in Oak Cliff, Texas. “I am so excited about having them here, I’m telling you, these young people are talented. Come out and enjoy this,” Harvey said.
UNIDOS is a program strengthening the bonds between the police and the local Hispanic community. The program began in late 2017, meeting with the local Hispanic community.
“UNIDOS en Palestine is about community,” Harvey said. “It’s about embracing a segment that has traditionally been disengaged for the most part. I really believe there is so much untapped potential that can change the dynamics of our city positively. This is a big deal, come out and be a part of this historic event.”
Sponsors for the event include: All-Star Ford, McClarty Toyota, Oncor and Walmart of Palestine.
