New nation-wide phone scam reported in Palestine

PALESTINE, December 23, 2013--Another scam, this one targeting senior citizens, has appeared in Anderson County.

The scam involves a phone call in which the caller claims they are from the I.R.S. and the resident owes back-taxes. The caller demands the resident make payment over the phone, and will resort to threats in order to pressure the resident to give payment information.

The IRS wants to assure residents they will never call and ask for payment over the phone. Do not give payment or personal information to anyone who calls unless all information and credibility is verified.

KYYK’s Gary Richards spoke to Palestine Police Lieutenant James Muniz about the scam and how residents can protect themselves.
