Tyler ISD will hold a new ...
NECHES, June 28, 2013--The 23rd annual Neches Wilderness Canoe Race will be held on August 3. Canoeists and Kayakers, young and old, expert and beginner, are expected out in large numbers for the annual fund raiser for Trinity Valley Community College special needs scholarship fund.
The 20 mile race begins at the Lake Palestine dam. The race is set up with two classes of paddlers: leisure class and pro class. Water stations and check points are setup at two locations along the racecourse, with race volunteers monitoring paddlers’ conditions, and providing water to anyone needing it. Radio operators are also stationed along the way to provide instant contact to emergency personnel, should it be necessary.
Check in will begin at 6:00 a.m. The Leisure Class canoes will begin launching at 8:00 a.m., with the Pro Class canoes beginning to launch at 9:00 a.m.
At the finish line, race volunteers pull canoes from the river and everyone enjoys hamburgers, cold drinks, and watermelon.
Those wishing to participate are encouraged to do so online at www.necheswildernessrace.com. The deadline for online registration is July 30. Participants are encouraged to register as early as possible, especially if they wish to rent a canoe. Registration fees start at $30 for a single leisure class canoeist.
