PALESTINE, May 19, 2014— This week is National Safe Boating Week, held May 17-23. It’s a reminder for both experienced and inexperienced boaters to always be safe on the water, and kicks off the year-long “Wear It!” national campaign promoting safe boating. For many, this could be a life-saving reminder before they go boating this upcoming Memorial Day Weekend.
Each year, approximately 500 people drown from recreational boating accidents. According to the U.S. Coast Guard’s latest recreational boating safety statistics, drowning was the reported cause of death in three-fourths of recreational boating fatalities and 84 percent of those who drowned were not wearing life jackets.
